Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
Since 1993, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne has been officially listed as one of France's most beautiful villages, and is definitely worth a visit. It is only a half-hour drive from Chez Mathieu.
If you want a beach trip without driving all the way to the coast, Aubettere has a lovely river beach. There is a lifeguard on the beach, with tennis and canoeing facilities, a kids' playground, and nearby restaurants.

The Monolithic Church of Saint-Jean is another attraction at Aubettere. The church is carved into the rock, and full of passages and nooks to explore. It is one of the largest and most spectacular subterranean churches in Europe.
