Brantôme

The medieval town of Brantôme is one of the one of most charming of small towns in the Perigord region. It is steeped in history, and has a range of attractions and activities. Only a 40-minute drive from Chez Mathieu, it is an easy and worthwhile day trip.

One of the main sites in Brantôme is the abbey, which according to legend was built in 789 by Charlemagne, king of the Franks. It is partially built into the cliff edge, with excavated caves that were once inhabited, and include extraordinary bas-reliefs.

The river Dronne runs through Brantôme, making it known as "Venice of the Perigord". Water activities include canoeing, and motorboat rides, the latter being fun for smaller children.
