Restaurants and Bars

Much of the eating out in the Perigord happens at lunchtime. The region is full of restaurants, many of which offer a "workers lunch", i.e a three or four-course meal at a flat rate of around 15-20 Euros. The turnover of restaurants is high, with some suddenly closing and new ones opening, which are often discovered by word-of-mouth. The below list will be frequently updated when we find out about any changes.

Restaurants:

L'École, Vendoire, tel 0524141191

This old schoolhouse-turned-restaurant is the nearest to Chez Mathieu, and is within walking distance (about 15 minutes up the hill). It has gone through several changes in ownership over the past 10 years, but is currently run by some lovely, friendly folk, Sandrine, Thomas and Francis. The setting is quite both quaint, with the old classroom as one of the dinner-time seating areas, with another seating area at the back, with spectacular views across the sunflower fields. It is advised to book as it does get busy.

La Cour des Miracles, Verteillac Tel 0553911719 or 0664009886.

According to our neighbours, this is currently a great place, with two lovely owners.

Chez Moran, St Marital de Viveyroles Tel 0553915257

L'Envie Gourmands, Salle Lavalette Tel 054973761

This is a child-friendly restaurant. They are very accommodating, and prepared a vegetarian meal for my self-proclaimed vegan 4-year-old, and had a nice selection of children's books.

Vegan/Vegetarian Guests:

It is hard in France to find vegan (végétalien/ne) or vegetarian (végétarien/ne) options. Occasionally fish appears on a so-called menu végétarien! However, most places are happy to serve something on request.

Comme à La Maison, Brantôme, is a refreshing option for a region where duck and cheese are so prevalent on the menus, with several home-cooked vegan dishes, as well as serving plant-based milk.

Bars:

L'École, Vendoire

The L'École owners opened up a bar in 2019 in the garden at the back of the restaurant.

Un-named bar, Champagne

In the nearby village of Champagne is one of the most authentic, rural French bars, where local villagers gather to play cards and drink pastis. It is run by 90-year-old Dede, and has quite the ambience!
