Villebois Lavalette
Villebois Lavalette is one of the closest of the larger, nearby villages. As well as being picturesque, Villebois is also convenient. There is a tourist office, a large Super U supermarket, a bank and cash machine, a chemist, and a boulangerie.
The medieval covered market still stands in the centre of the village, and holds a weekly market every Saturday. There, you can buy fresh, local fruit, vegetables, cheeses, and other foods and crafts. We like to buy a bottle of white wine from Café de la Reunion in the square and enjoy it with a plate of fresh oysters for lunch from the market!
Two historic buildings make Villebois Lavalette stand out. The village can be spotted from afar due to the eye-catching château perched on top of a hill, built on a site that dates back to Roman times. The église Saint-Romain, built in the thirteenth century and restored in the nineteenth century, is situated in between the château and the market square. It can be accessed by steep steps behind the market square.
